Asia Bibi's appeal to be heard in October
Asia Bibi's family and supporters have launched an online petition calling for her release
August 26 2016Asia Bibi, a Christian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy after drinking water meant for her Muslim colleagues, will have her appeal heard by Pakistan’s Supreme Court in October. She has been in jail since June 2009. There has been international pressure calling for her release, including from the Anglican Consultative Council. At its meeting in Lusaka in April, the council called for a fresh investigation and “honourable acquittal”.
In May, Archbishop Freier called the case “a disgraceful application of Pakistan’s blasphemy law” and said it brought “tragedy and shame upon... the beautiful nation of Pakistan”.
