Diocese appoints new General Manager

Archbishop welcomes new appointee Justin Lachal

March 2 2021The Anglican Diocese of Melbourne has appointed Mr Justin Lachal as its new General Manager, starting on 5 April.

Mr Lachal is Professor of Practice – Accounting and Data Analytics at La Trobe University and works at Jones Lang LaSalle as the Asia Pacific lead on International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) 16 implementation. In the latter role, his clients include Telstra, ANZ, Australia Post and the Victorian Department of Finance. He is also a board member of Sunraysia TAFE.

His appointment follows an exhaustive five-month search – by diocesan leadership, Archbishop-in-Council, the Melbourne Anglican Diocesan Corporation and professional search firm Fish & Nankivell – and he was recommended unanimously by the Nominations Committee.

Archbishop Philip Freier said: "I am delighted at the appointment and welcome Justin to the Diocese. Justin has shown particular strengths in communications and teamwork."

Mr Lachal, 50, is active in the Roman Catholic Church, formerly serving on the boards of the Good Shepherd (Australia and New Zealand) and currently on Jesuit Social Services. The statement announcing his appointment said he had always been heavily involved in parish life.

He holds three Masters degrees -- in Business Administration, Business Information Technology and Applied Finance -- as well as two graduate diplomas, and is also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Married with three children – aged 19, 17 and 13 – Mr Lachal enjoys running, playing the piano and spending time with his family.

He succeeds Interim Chief Executive Chris Arnold, who has been with the diocese since Mr Ken Spackman, who had previously served for 11 years as Registrar, resigned as CEO last August to move to Mallacoota and assist rebuilding efforts there after the devastating 2019-20 bushfires.
