Media release: Church can live with plebiscite result
Archbishop Philip Freier has written a pastoral letter to Anglican bishops on the proposed same-sex marriage plebiscite
September 9 2016The head of the Anglican Church in Australia, Melbourne Archbishop Philip Freier, has written a pastoral letter to the nation’s Anglican bishops outlining his view on the proposed plebiscite on same-sex marriage.
In the letter, Archbishop Freier recognises that Anglicans, like other Australians, hold a variety of positions in good faith. He says the Federal Government campaigned on the promise of a plebiscite and might reasonably expect to abide by it.
He suggests that the Anglican Church can preserve its view of holy matrimony while accepting that the Government has endorsed a wider view of marriage, as has already happened with protections for de facto relationships.
His overwhelming concern is that the tenor of the debate – on both sides – be constructive and respectful rather than harsh or vilifying.
The letter has been published in full on his blog. Read it here.
