Mordialloc community salutes Anzacs

November 8 2015A Gallipoli centenary precinct in the grounds of Saint Nicholas Mordialloc will offer a public space where both present and future generations can recall and honour the first Anzacs.

After a memorable visit to the battlefields of Gallipoli, Victor Haste, a retired Anglican priest and parishioner at Saint Nicholas, had resolved to explore a way for the local community to honour the service and sacrifice of the Australian Navy and Army personnel who served in the 1915 joint campaigns.

Longbeach RSL donated a military flagpole and yard arm from the now closed Edithvale/Aspendale RSL. Blue stone pitchers were donated to build a parapet wall on which to install the commemorative plaque. Funding also came from the state government and the City of Kingston Community Grants Program.

“An important aspect was to recognise the Australian Naval involvement, in both the Dardanelles campaign and the Gallipoli landings,” Victor Haste said. “The commemorative plaque proudly displays both badges of army and navy, side by side”.
