He was made deacon in Armidale in 1963 and was ordained a priest in 1963 also in Armidale. His ministries included curacies in Moree and Wee Waa; Priest-in-Charge Collarenebri and Ashford/Delungra/Tingha; Bush Church Aid Missioner Priest; Incumbent South Tamworth and Moree; Archdeacon Gwydir.

In Melbourne, Peter served as incumbent St John’s Heidelberg 1988 to 2001; Area Dean Heidelberg 1992 to 96; Archdeacon La Trobe 1996 to 1998; Archdeacon Melbourne 1998 to 2006; Member of the Cathedral Chapter 1999 to 2006; Vicar of St James Old Cathedral West Melbourne 2001 to 2006. He retired in Melbourne in 2006 and received the Archbishop’s Permission to Officiate.

A service to celebrate Peter's life was held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Williamstown on 17 February.

The Right Revd Philip Huggins, bishop of the Oodthenong area of episcopal care, gave the sermon at the funeral service. He described Peter Swane as a “kind and generous soul”, who “loved Jesus and served our Church with character and competency.”

He said, “He was the best of the grand Evangelical traditions of our Diocese. A team player, standing on the solid ground of Scripture, integrating worship with pastoral care in his deep love of Jesus, Saviour.”

Always there in the background, he said, were Peter’s wife, Margaret, and their family.

“He and Margaret’s companionship, mutual support and delight in each other was vivid. A wonderful couple.”

We give thanks to God for the life and ministry of the Revd Peter Swane, and pray for Margaret and their family at this time.

May he rest in peace.
