A servant who loved God and God’s people
October 19 2015The Reverend Edward Charles Smith died peacefully on Saturday 8 August 2015 in Melbourne after a long illness.
Ed Smith was made a deacon in Melbourne in 1963 and was ordained a priest in 1964.
His ministry in the Diocese of Melbourne, as Curate at St George’s Bentleigh from 1964 to 1965; Curate at Christ Church Berwick from 1965 to 1967; Incumbent at St Bartholomew’s Ferntree Gully with St Thomas’ Upper Ferntree Gully from 1967 to 1974; Incumbent at St Mark’s Dromana with All Saints Rosebud and St Katherine’s McCrae from 1974 to 1982; Incumbent at St James Ivanhoe from 1982 to 1993; Inter-Church Trade and Industry Mission Local Police Chaplain from 1975 to 1995; Incumbent Christ Church Hawthorn from 1993 to 2003; Priest in Charge Christ Church Hawthorn in 2004 and retired in 2004. Ed celebrated his 50th Anniversary of Priesting in November 2014.
At his funeral service, which was held privately, his daughter, the Revd Sandy Solomon, said, “Colleagues have sent us many wonderful reflections on Dad and his ministry in recent days. One who can't attend today wrote me saying, ‘your father's commitment to parish ministry was long and distinguished, and will be paralleled by very few in the future. His ministry, and that of your Mum, was a blessing to many.’
“Ed was a servant of God. He loved God and his people.”
