Humble and Christ-like servant passes on

August 5 2020A former Senior Chaplain at the Brotherhood of St Laurence, the Revd Don Edgar OAM, died on 16 July.

Father Edgar was ordained for the Wangaratta diocese almost 60 years ago and also served in the Riverina, the Northern Territory and Queensland, before returning to Victoria as Rector of Tongala, in Bendigo diocese, from 1980-85.

From 1985 until 2014, he served in Melbourne’s west, with the Anglican Inner-City Mission at Kensington until 1990, as Vicar of Footscray West until 1994 and as Vicar of Footscray until 2008. He then worked at the River Nile Learning Centre in Footscray.

His ministry at the Brotherhood encompassed aged care and work with refugees and newly arrived migrants.

Bishop Kate Prowd wrote on 17 July that Fr Edgar’s ministry to the poor and marginalised “was humble and Christ-like”.

“One of Don’s four sons spoke with me yesterday, saying that Don has ‘left behind a treasure chest of memories and guidance’ for so many to use,” she wrote.

“Don was a generous, available and wise mentor to me since becoming a bishop, most especially in my ministry amongst our Sudanese brethren.”

His livestreamed funeral was held on 24 July at All Saints Footscray at 10.30am.
