St Paul and St Barnabas Newcomb parishioners raised money for building upgrades through a successful high tea fundraiser recently.
The parish needed to improve the kitchen and bathroom areas in its church hall, to make it safer for its children and families ministry programs.
The high tea contributed more than $3600 to the costs of replacing the linoleum wet areas at the Newcomb Church Hall, bringing it up to date with current health standards.
Vicar the Reverend Wendy Gravolin said a significant reason for the renovation was the parish’s plan to start a Mainly Music program in the first term of next year.
Mrs Gravolin said the program was a way for the parish to build stronger connections with the local community and aligned with its goal of developing a family and children’s ministry.
The day was organised by church warden Marlene Lacey who led a team of gifted bakers to cater for the occasion. Goodies included scones, chocolate brownies, lemon tarts, jelly slices, sandwiches and small quiches and truffles.
Mrs Gravolin said Ms Lacey filled 80 plus high tea plates for the guests who included members of the local Zumba group and a Barwon Health chaplain.
She said the Zumba group was a regular user of the hall and would also greatly benefit from its upgrade.
The guests were also treated to a presentation by Queenscliffe’s “Cottage by the Sea” speaker Bill Kerr about the difference this holiday home made in the lives of children since 1890.
