Organisers of an ecumenical project seeking to produce a collection of sermons responding to the Statement from the Heart are calling for more submissions from women and Indigenous preachers.

Lecturers from the Indigenous Studies school at the University of Divinity and the Uniting Church’s Creative Ministries Network congregation have already received 10 submissions for a planned anthology, but want more women and Indigenous contributions.

Indigenous Studies lecturer and editorial leader the Reverend Dr Garry Worete Deverell said several parishes were responding to the Uluru Statement from the Heart through sermons and the group wanted to publish the best ones.

Dr Deverell said he aimed to select 12 homilies for publication in a book, Preaching from the Heart, and have it available in bookshops and at theological schools by the end of the year.

But CMN congregation coordinator the Reverend John Bottomley said there was a lack of women and Indigenous participants.

Mr Bottomley said out of the 10 sermons they had received so far, only two were from women, while just three were from Indigenous preachers, so the group was keen to build up more contributions from those cohorts.

He said the group was already in negotiations with a publisher, and was preparing a draft, but that people could submit until the end of June.
