Victoria’s oldest Anglican church will celebrate the 180th anniversary of its foundation stone being laid.

Christ Church Geelong is the oldest Anglican church still occupying its original site in the state.

For parishioners, the history is part of the appeal of worshipping at Christ Church.

Churchwarden and lay minister Judy Munro said walking into the church building evoked a wonderful feeling of prayerfulness.

Mrs Munro said the special Eucharist Sunday 8 October would be a chance to give thanks for the past and look forward to the future.

She said she hoped churchgoers would feel a sense of reconnecting with history.

Parish priest the Reverend Lankiri Thaba said it was a privilege and an honour to minister in a church with such a long history.

Mr Thaba said he was looking forward to celebrating the parish’s milestone.

He said he hoped people who attended the special Eucharist would feel as though they were a part of the church’s history.

Churchwarden Sue Murrant said being in the church had a meditative quality to it.

“There’s 180 years of prayers being absorbed into the walls and energy of the place,” she said. “So many families and people have been through there.”

Mrs Murrant said the anniversary celebrations would be a chance for the parish to come together in acknowledgement of their shared history.

Mrs Murrant said the Christ Church community was vibrant and excited for the future.
